Accuray Announces First CyberKnife® Systems in Africa, Providing a New Option and Hope for Potentially Life-Saving Radiation Treatments for More Cancer Patients

World’s Only Robotic Radiation Therapy Device Delivers Extremely Precise Treatments in Just 1 to 5 Out-Patient Sessions

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Accuray Incorporated (NASDAQ: ARAY) announced today the company is expanding its global footprint with the introduction of its CyberKnife® platform in Africa, making it possible for more patients to obtain access to the extremely precise stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) treatments the system delivers. The Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357 (Hospital 57357) medical care team is the first in Egypt and Africa to treat patients using the system, while the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH) is the second in Africa and first in Kenya to acquire the system.

Accuray Incorporated (PRNewsFoto/Accuray Incorporated) (PRNewsFoto/Accuray Incorporated)

The number of new cancer cases diagnosed annually in Egypt and Kenya is anticipated to increase by approximately 75% and 126%, respectively, between 2020 and 20401. Innovative treatment options – such as the CyberKnife platform – can effectively treat certain neurologic conditions and a wide range of tumor types throughout the body, and at various stages of disease, while minimizing the impact of the treatment on a patient’s life.

“Our partnerships with the Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357 and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital teams directly aligns with our vision, and their goal, to expand all patient access to the most advanced radiation therapy treatments and to improve healthcare equity in areas where historically these treatments have not been an option,” said Suzanne Winter, president and CEO of Accuray. “We are proud that such esteemed organizations have selected the CyberKnife System to enhance the quality of care they provide their patients. The system will provide them with the tools they need to offer more patients extremely precise, powerful treatments that enable them to get back to living their lives, faster.”

The entire CyberKnife procedure is typically completed in just 1 to 5 out-patient sessions, providing a shorter overall course of treatment compared to conventional radiation therapy which typically takes 30-40 sessions. The condensed treatment schedule causes less disruption of patients’ daily lives and enables those people who are unable to travel a month or more for care to receive radiation therapy treatments delivered with sub-millimeter precision and accuracy.

Improving Patient Outcomes in Egypt
Hospital 57357 continues its legacy of innovation with the installation and treatment of the first patients in Egypt and Africa using the CyberKnife System. The radiation treatment delivered with the system is a non-invasive, non-surgical, typically pain-free outpatient procedure that does not require incisions or general anesthesia. Most patients will not require hospitalization or experience a long recovery period following the treatment procedure.

“At Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357, patients and their families are at the center of everything we do. We are proud to be the first hospital in Egypt and Africa to offer our patients treatment with the CyberKnife System, an innovative radiation therapy delivery technology we believe will enable us to improve patients’ outcomes and increase overall survival rates,” said Mohamed Saad Zaghloul, M.D., head of the radiation oncology department, Children’s Cancer Hospital 57357. “The system is designed to treat tumors throughout the body and provides us with an alternative to surgery for patients who have inoperable or surgically complex tumours, expanding the number of patients we can help.”

Dr. Zaghloul continued, “Importantly, we can decrease the number of radiation sessions needed to between 1 and 5, without sacrificing the precision of the treatment we deliver. This is a significant benefit for our patients who want to be able to get back to spending time with their families and participating in the daily activities that other children their age enjoy.”

Expanding Access to Advanced Cancer Care in Kenya
KUTRRH is a leading Public National Referral Hospital dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of Kenyans and global citizens through provision of patient-centered and evidence-based healthcare. The CyberKnife® System will provide their team with the tools they need to provide optimal treatments for people diagnosed with cancer, benign tumors or certain neurologic disorders. The system was designed to provide clinicians with the speed required for workflow efficiency and the ability to deliver treatments more quickly – in as little as 15 minutes – while maintaining the precision and accuracy required for SRS and SBRT.

“In Kenya, cancer is a public health concern and too few people who would benefit from radiation therapy treatments are receiving care. For our region and our country, we believe the CyberKnife System will revolutionize cancer care,” said Prof. Olive Mugenda Ph.D., MGH Chairperson, Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital.

Continued Prof. Mugenda, “The Cyberknife System has been one of the reason Kenyans have been travelling abroad for treatment. Having this system in Kenya, will not only improve the quality of life but also reverse outbound medical tourism.”

Jos. Hansen (East Africa) Ltd. is a leading distributor of trusted and reliable healthcare equipment and is the exclusive partner for the Accuray CyberKnife and TomoTherapy® platforms, including the next-generation Radixact® System, in Kenya. Jos. Hansen has a long-term relationship with the KUTRRH team and consulted with them as they evaluated radiation therapy devices and selected the CyberKnife S7™ System.

Seychelles takes up chairmanship of Indian Ocean ports association

Seychelles is the new chair of the Association of Indian Ocean Islands Ports (AIOIP) for the next two years, a platform that is important for the island nation as it starts the expansion of Port Victoria.

Seychelles took over the chairmanship from Mauritius after a two-day meeting at the Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA).

Established in 2007 with headquarters in Reunion, a French overseas department, APIOI members include the ports of Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte and Seychelles. Its aim is to create a cooperation dynamic between the ports of the region in order to better defend their common interests and jointly study their challenges and opportunities.

In his address, the chairman of SPA, Gilbert Frichot, said that the APIOI is now expanding its reach and engaging beyond the Indian Ocean Island states with the aim of enhancing connectivity in the South West Indian Ocean countries.

“This is a subject dear to all members as it addresses shipping connectivity; sharing of information and the implementation of National and Regional Single Window systems. The latter is of further interest to the Seychelles, as it looks at kick-starting the long overdue Port Victoria renovation and extension project,” said Frichot.

He added that “SPA fervently believes that Seychelles and other members have and will greatly benefit from the synergy provided by the APIOI platform.”

The chief executive of SPA, Sony Payet, told the press that it is better to work as a group so that the voices of the Indian Ocean Ports are heard.

“The idea is to see what cooperation exists between Seychelles and the other ports and to bring in things that will be beneficial to the country so that we move forward,” said Payet.

Members of the two-day meeting highlighted skyrocketing shipping costs as one of the challenges they are facing at the moment.

Payet said that as small island states “we are vulnerable and by grouping, we are determining how we can have our voices heard and bringing forward viable ideas in the interest of each region.”

Other challenges the ports are facing include maritime security issues such as drug smuggling and trafficking, human trafficking, arms trafficking and illegal fishing.

“Together we need to strengthen our resolve in order to detect, contain and eliminate these maritime ills that can give a bad reputation to our region,” said SPA’s CEO.

Members also talked about the possibility of luxury tourism which would mean more luxury yachts and cruise ships visiting the region.

FBI Joins Australian Hunt for Data Hackers

Australia has asked the American FBI to help catch computer hackers responsible for one of Australia’s biggest data breaches. Personal details, including home addresses, driver license and passport numbers, of more than 10 million customers of the Singapore-owned telecom giant Optus were stolen.

A massive amount of personal information about Optus customers in Australia was stolen and an extortion threat made to the company. But then there was an apparent twist. An apology was issued on an online forum by an account that investigators believe belonged to the alleged hacker, who had been unnerved by the attention the case had generated.

“Too many eyes,” it read. “We will not sale (sic) data to anyone. Sorry to 10.2m Australians whose data was leaked. Ransom not paid but we don’t care anymore.”

The Australian government has blamed Optus, one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the country, for the breach. Australia’s cybersecurity minister, Clare O’Neil, said the company had made it easy for hackers to get in.

“What is of concern for us is how what is quite a basic hack was undertaken on Optus,” she said. “We should not have a telecommunications provider in this country which has effectively left the window open for data of this nature to be stolen.”

But Optus Chief Executive Officer Kelly Bayer Rosmarin denied the company’s cyber defenses were inadequate. She said the data was encrypted and there were multiple layers of protection. But for many Optus customers, there is deep anxiety that their personal information has been compromised.

The FBI has joined the hunt for the Optus data thieves.

Frank Montoya Jr, a former FBI special agent, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that a foreign government could be involved.

“We try to determine if it is a nation state or if it is a criminal enterprise,” he said. “Now, that can be a challenge, too, because sometimes the nation state is the criminal enterprise, and I think of North Korea, for instance, and how they go after these databases for various reasons. But sometimes it is just about selling it on the dark web so they can get access to hard currency.”

Australian cyber security experts have warned that unless companies do more to protect their customers’ personal information, a data breach like the Optus theft could happen again.

Comedian Trevor Noah to Leave ‘The Daily Show’ After 7 Years

Comedian Trevor Noah, host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central, said he was going to leave the program after hosting it for seven years, indicating he wanted to dedicate more time to stand-up comedy.

The 38-year-old comedian — who was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and moved to the United States in 2011 — had big shoes to fill when he took over in 2015 after the exit of longtime host Jon Stewart.

He quickly established himself with his own brand, suited for an era where online influence was often greater than that of content on cable.

His reign on The Daily Show required him to delicately cover some crucial moments in American history, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol.

“I spent two years in my apartment (during COVID-19), not on the road. Stand-up was done, and when I got back out there again, I realized that there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring,” Noah told his studio audience late on Thursday. The Daily Show posted a clip of Noah’s remarks on social media.

“We have laughed together; we have cried together. But after seven years, I feel like it’s time,” Noah said. He ended his remarks by thanking his viewers as his studio audience stood up to applaud him.

Noah, who roasted U.S. politicians and the media at the White House Correspondents Association dinner in April, did not mention his exact departure date in his remarks Thursday. It is not known who would succeed him.

The key to addressing current affairs through a comedic lens lies in a comedian’s intention, Noah said in a 2016 interview with Reuters, adding that he learns from his mistakes.

“I don’t think I would ever have been ready, but that’s when you must do it, you will not be ready,” the comedian told Reuters in the context of having succeeded his legendary predecessor.
