Bridge International Academies celebrates potential of all African children on Day of the African Child

Bridge International Academies School

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bridge International Academies is marking the Day of the African Child by celebrating the potential of each and every child in Africa.

The school network, which includes Bridge Kenya, Bridge Nigeria and Bridge Uganda, supports children and parents in underprivileged communities through quality education.

The day, commemorating a series of demonstrations and protests in 1976 led by thousands of South African school children, is synonymous with taking action in education, and 2023 marks a historic opportunity that if missed will be a great loss for Africa and the world.

2023 is the year when Sub-Saharan Africa leads the world as the region with the most young people (0-14) – the size and acceleration of this age cohort are historically unprecedented. Additionally, 60% of the region’s population is under 25 years of age.

Reuben Wambugu, Bridge Group Managing Director, said, “This demographic tipping point marks a historic moment of opportunity. With effective education, a skilled and energised future labour force could emerge from Africa and drive transformation both on the continent and around the world. Crippling rates of learning poverty threaten to derail this prospect however. Only 10% of children in sub-Saharan Africa are able to read a simple sentence by the age of 10.”

recent study in Kenya of Bridge International Academies pedagogies, led by Nobel Prize winning economist Professor Michael Kremer, confirmed its “highly standardised education has the potential to produce dramatic learning gains at scale.”

Speaking on the success of Bridge’s methods, Bridge Nigeria Managing Director, Foyinsola Akinjayeju, said, “Bridge Nigeria schools produce some of the top students in the Nigeria National Common Entrance Exam. 80% perform above the average sample for literacy compared to just 18% in public schools. For eight years now Bridge Kenya pupils too have exceeded the national average in their primary school exit exam. With results like these it is clear that all African children can and must benefit from access to a quality education which drives learning. Their potential is unlimited. All African parents want their children to learn. Bridge International Academies is supporting thousands of them to do so.”

Hitachi Energy wins order for first subsea electricity interconnection between France and Spain

HVDC link improves the security and quality of power in the region, advancing the integration of emission-free energy

Zurich, Switzerland, June 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, today announced it won an order from Electricity Interconnection France-Spain (Inelfe), the joint venture bringing together operators of the Spanish (Red Eléctrica) and French (RTE) electricity transmission networks, in charge of the construction and commissioning of all cross-border connections between both countries, to supply four high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations to interconnect France and Spain via a subsea cable across the Biscay Gulf.

The Biscay Gulf interconnection, labeled as project of common interest (PCI) at the European level, will consist of two HVDC links, with a converter station at each end of both systems. Combined, the links will efficiently supply a total of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 400 kilovolts (kV) over 400 kilometers (km). Providing the equivalent of the power consumption of more than two million households1, the links will improve the safety, stability, and quality of the electricity supply between the two countries. It will advance the integration of emission-free electricity and create a more efficient system to generate savings that benefit consumers and the rest of Europe.2 Most of the link will be underwater, but a short section of the link cable route will return to land to avoid the deep Capbreton Canyon.

“Cross border, and often subsea, interconnections are vital to Europe’s increasingly interconnected grid,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director at Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business. “Through our pioneering HVDC technology, we enable Inelfe to accelerate the two countries’ sustainability goals, improving the safety, stability, and quality of electricity supply between France and Spain and the rest of Europe.”

Inelfe (Interconexión Eléctrica Francia-España or Electricity Interconnection France-Spain) was set up following the 2008 Zaragoza Agreement, between the governments of Spain and France, with the mission to enhance the exchange of electricity between the two countries. The resulting infrastructure doubled the interconnection capacity between France and Spain from 1,400 MW to 2,800 MW today. With the Biscay Gulf interconnection, the capacity to exchange power will soon reach 5,000 MW.3

In line with its Purpose to champion the urgency of a clean energy transition through innovation and collaboration, Hitachi Energy is collaborating with VINCI, an industry leader in energy and construction. Together the two companies will provide an advanced solution for the Biscay Gulf project by delivering the engineering and power technologies and the construction of the converter stations. The collaboration with VINCI will leverage the core competencies of the two companies to deliver a best-in-class solution for the project.

Akatsi South: Motor rider, one other sentenced to 15 years each for robbery

Agbovi Harrison, a 20-year-old motor rider, and Hlortsi Raphael, 23, an auto mechanic, have been sentenced to 15 years each in hard labour by a Sogakope Circuit court for robbery.

They pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime, to wit robbery, and robbery

but the court found them guilty after concrete evidence attested to the crime

Chief Inspector Seidu Kodua, a Police prosecutor, told the court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo that on January 23, last year, at about 1600 hours, the convicts were arrested by a mob at Kpevi, a community near Gornikope within Akatsi South after attacking a commercial motor rider of his Sanya motorbike with registration number M22VR 121 at Kpevi.

He said on the day of the planned activities, one of the suspects hired the services of Edro Tobias, a commercial motor rider from Datsiedu near Ziope.

Chief Inspector Kodua said the pillion rider upon reaching a planned location, attempted to strangle the rider with a rope with support from other accomplices who emerged from the bush, where they succeeded in snatching the motor away from the victim.

However, the prosecution said luck eluded the convict after the bike developed a fault at Avadre junction, which compelled them to push the motorbike into a nearby bush, which some youth in the area suspected to be a stolen one and went on a search mission ostensibly to retrieve the bike.

Chief Inspector Kodua said the convicts were apprehended by the agitating youth and handed over to the Police, where they were arraigned.

The convict, through their counsel, pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against them but were later found guilty after a full trial was conducted.

Another suspect, according to the Police at Akatsi, is currently at large while efforts are underway to apprehend him.

Bibiani SHTS 1993-year group donates to alma mater

The 1993-year group of Bibiani Senior High Technical School (BISEC) has donated a full set of brass band worth six thousand Ghana Cedi to the School Cadet Corps.

Mr. Samuel Tawiah, leader of the group, together with some members of the group, who presented the items, said the donation was to show appreciation to their alma mater.

According to him, the cadet corps was created during their time and that it was imperative to support the cadets with the items to help improve and raise the standards of cadet activities in the school.

He announced that Old Students Association in collaboration with the Parents Association (PA) had this year constructed a mechanized borehole for the school to reduce its water problems.

He expressed optimism the school management and students would give the needed care and maintenance to the items and urged the students to pursue their dreams diligently.

‘Remember that you came to the school as an individual and you will leave as an individual based on your academic results,’ he admonished.

He pointed out that the government alone could meet the demands of education, hence, the need for the participation of other stakeholders like Old Students Association to help manage schools successfully.

Mr. George Baidoo, Headmaster of the school, who on behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and the students received the items, extended his gratitude to the old students and appealed to other stakeholders to come to the aid of the school.

President Akufo-Addo dispatches six new envoys

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Wednesday granted letters of Commission to six new envoys, charging them to facilitate investments that would boost Ghana’s economic recovery agenda.

The six, all career diplomats, include the immediate past Director of State Protocol, Mr Samuel Yao Kumah, High Commissioner to Australia, Ms Doris Adzo Denyo Brese, Ambassador to the Czech Republic, and Mr Mohammed Habib Iddris, Ambassador to Kuwait.

The others were Mr Kingsford Amoako, Ambassador to Liberia, Mr Mark Michael Entsie, Ambassador to Libya and Mr Alex Wiredu Adu, Ambassador to Niger.

At a ceremony at the Jubilee House, Accra, President Akufo-Addo, after administering the Oaths of Allegiance, Secrecy, and the official oath, congratulated the envoys on their well-deserved appointments.

With their over two decades of experience in the foreign service, he said he was confident that they would make Ghana proud.

The President told the envoys that their appointments had come at a particularly important moment, where all countries, including Ghana, are working to return themselves to a state of normalcy, following the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, whose effects were worsened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

He said the two events had brought to the fore the need for nations to strengthen and deepen alliances and cooperation because ‘no country can afford to go it alone…we either succeed together or perish together.’

‘And this is where your work as High Commissioner and ambassadors would be needed most,’ he stressed.

President Akufo-Addo said Ghana had begun the process of reviving its economy with the three-billion-dollar facility secured from the International Monetary Fund, to repair the country’s public finances that had taken a severe hit in very recent times.

‘Whilst we continue to work on the medium to long-term structural changes that are the heart of our goal of creating a Ghana Beyond Aid, I am confident that with determination, hard work, unity and the proverbial Ghanaian sense of enterprise, we would succeed, we would make it and indeed, this too shall pass.

The President told the envoys that his administration’s unprecedented flagship initiative, the GHS100 billion post-COVID-19 Ghana CARES Obaatanpa Programme geared to stabilise, revitalise and transform Ghana’s economy, must be the pivot around which they engaged the rest of the world.

They should, therefore, familiarise themselves with the objectives of the Programme, because they represented ‘our surest way out of the pandemic and would thrust Ghana back onto the path of progress and prosperity.’

‘Each one of you must help and contribute to the success of the programme by facilitating amongst other things, as much foreign investment into the country as you can,’ he implored.

President Akufo-Addo asked them to work with their host governments and multilateral stakeholders in the fight against armed conflicts, terrorism and violent extremism, the threats of climate change, and the illicit flow of funds from Africa.

He urged them to always promote the image of Ghana, whose reputation amongst the comity of nations continued to be high.

‘You represent a country that as a result of the commendable conduct of the Ghanaian people, is regarded as one of the most stable on the African continent. It is a functioning democracy, governed by the rule of law, and respect for individual liberties, human rights, and the principles of democratic accountability.

‘We are regarded as a beacon of democracy in Africa, you are the most visible symbol of our country out there. In all your actions, you must jealously guard our country’s image… I am confident this is a charge you would keep,’ he said.

High Commissioner Kumah on behalf of his colleagues thanked the President for the opportunity to serve the country and for the confidence reposed in them.

‘President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has found it worthy and pleasing to appoint us as High Commissioner and Ambassadors. We are, therefore, deeply grateful to him for the appointment to serve this great nation.

‘We pledge to do the utmost that merits the trust and confidence that the President of the Republic has reposed in us. In so doing, we will be guided by our core mandate to promote and protect the interest of Ghana and her nationals abroad to the best of our abilities so help us God,’ he pledged.
