NC condemns targeting of journalists in IIOJK

Srinagar, March 10, 2022 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference has condemned the muzzling of the press and targeting of journalists by the Indian authorities.

The NC in a meeting of its Central Working Committee (CWC) chaired by its President, Farooq Abdullah, said clampdown on journalists and media personalities is insidious. It asked the Indian government to refrain from using state apparatus from arm twisting and intimidating journalists and said there is complete intolerance of even a single critical word.

The members demanded revocation of all charges against journalists and also sought immediate release of those who are undergoing confinement. They also expressed deep concern over the environment of political intolerance. During the meeting the individual members gave their estimation of the prevailing situation with regards to the deteriorating situation, development deficit and the rising tide of intolerance against contrarian views in IIOJK.

The meeting noted that the escalating level of violence in IIOJK is contrary to the Indian government’s claims of the return of peace in the territory. The CWC maintained that it will fight using all peaceful, legal and democratic means to reverse the actions of August 5, 2019. The Modi-led fascist Indian regime had revoked the special status of Kashmir and split it into two union territories on August 5, 2019.

The CWC said nothing has changed on ground and the much touted promises on employment generation, development and investment have proved hollow. The meeting was attended among others by vice president, Omar Abdullah and general secretary, Ali Muhammad Saghar.

Kozhikode, March 10, 2022 (PPI-OT):Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that the people ruling the country are spreading anger and hatred, and dividing people. Speaking at the inauguration of a building of Mukkam Muslim Orphanage in Kozhikode city in the Indian state of Kerala, he said the result of the anger spread by the government reflects on the economy – the increasing level of unemployment and sky-rocketing prices of commodities.

“Today, it is clear that people ruling our country are spreading anger, spreading hatred and dividing the country. You can see the result of the anger spread by our government. You can see what has happened to our economy, look at the level of unemployment, the skyrocketing prices,” Rahul Gandhi, who was on a two-day visit to Kerala, said. All of this is due to the people being divided and not working together, he said.

UNHRC’s inaction on Indian oppression in IIOJK deplored

Islamabad, March 10, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Chairman of Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR), Altaf Hussain Wani has expressed dismay over the inaction of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Kashmir and said that the rights body’s negligence had encouraged the Indian government to continue with its oppression and suppression in illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The KIIR chief said this while taking part in a debate held under agenda item 2 at the ongoing 49th Session of the United Nations Human rights Council in Geneva.

Speaking on behalf of the World Muslim Congress, Altaf Hussain Wani commended the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for highlighting the pressing problems the world was facing, today. He, however, maintained that it was unfortunate to see that the Council had not been able to take action against India whose forces had been at war with the civilian population in IIOJK for last several decades.

Drawing the Council’s attention towards the dire political and human rights situation in IIOJK, he said that the occupied territory had become a hell for its residents where the Indian government had robbed the people of all fundamental rights, even the right to life.

Wani said, we have been telling this story of Kashmir for the last thirty years in this Council and earlier in the Commission of Human Rights. He said, the stories of the suffering of Kashmiris got some attention of the OHCHR in 2018 and 2019 when it released two reports on the situation of human rights in the occupied territory. “Ironically, the office has failed to report on the situation after that and did not move beyond that,” he said, adding that the Kashmiris demand equality and justice.

Urging the OHCHR to move beyond those two reports, the KIIR chief said that it was high time that the Council should act and establish a Commission of Inquiry to investigate past and ongoing human rights violations in IIOJK.
