UP: Arrest warrant issued against SP Maurya, day after quitting BJP

New Delhi, January 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):A day after Swami Prasad Maurya, the cabinet minister in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party government, warrant has been issued to arrest him in Sultanpur. The Sultanpur MP-MLA court has issued an arrest warrant against former BJP minister Swami Prasad Maurya, allegedly for speaking against Hindu gods in 2014.

He resigned from the UP cabinet, citing grave oppression of Dalits, OBCs, and farmers, unemployed and small businessmen in the BJP government, on Tuesday. Maurya is alleged to have made a speech against Hindu gods and stoking communal feelings when he was a part of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), seven years ago.

In his speech in 2014, Maurya reportedly said, “Goddess Gauri or Lord Ganesha should not be worshipped during weddings. It is a conspiracy by upper caste-dominated system to mislead and enslave Dalits and backward castes.” Maurya, who joined Samajwadi Party soon after resigning from Yogi Government, has been asked to appear in court on January 24.
