Hajj: NAHCON urges compliance with Saudi health guidelines

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), on Thursday urged members of the 2023 Hajj National Medical Team to comply with the Saudi Arabian health guidelines for operation.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON, Alhaji Zikrullah Hassan, made the call while inaugurating the 230 members of the National Medical Team, at Hajj House, in Abuja.

Hassan also advised the team against infractions of Saudi Arabian health regulations during the operation.

He said the medical team was the first committee to be inaugurated for the 2023 Hajj because of the importance the commission attached to medical issue.

“The first thing we all need to comply with is to ensure total compliance with the Saudi Arabian health guidelines. As far as Saudi Arabia is concern, it will not tolerate any infractions on their guidelines.

“I am sure the leadership of the National Medical Team is fully aware of this and they will adhere to that. I don’t need to remind you of your medical ethics which you are aware yourselves.

“There is going to be much work in this year’s hajj because we have been given a quota of 95,000 Hajj slots which means more work for the members of the medical team,’’ he said.

Earlier, Chairman of the team and Commissioner, Planning, Research, Statistics, Information and Library Services, Sheikh Suleiman Momoh, said that the selection of members of the team was very rigorous.

“Having been chosen, you have to display your capacity that you are fit for the job. One thing that I want to sound to us is that the management of the commission will not tolerate any officer leaving his duty post.

“Over 10,000 people applied to be part of the 2023 hajj medical team so you must prove that you worth it,’’ he said.

Also, the NAHCON’s Commissioner of Operations, Alhaji Abdullahi Magaji-Hardawa, urged members of the team to take their responsibility seriously.

“Whether you are a monitor or not, Allah is watching you. Any acts of negligence, Allah knows better. The chairman of NAHCON may not be aware but Allah is watching you,’’ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

FGN securities, safe, risk-free investment opportunities, DMO assures Nigerians

The Debt Management Office (DMO) has assured Nigerians that the various Federal Government Securities were safe, risk-free and offered good returns on investment.

The Director-General of the DMO, Patience Oniha said this on Thursday at the FGN Securities Issuance Awareness Programme in Gombe State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme was held in collaboration with the stockbroking firm for the Federal Government, CSL Stockbrokers Limited

According to Oniha, who was represented by Mr Sani Abubakar, Head, Policy Strategy and Risk Management Department, DMO, FGN Securities are backed by full faith and credit of the Federal Government of Nigeria

She added that they were default risk-free.

She said they offered instead opportunities that guarantee profitable returns without any fear of investors losing their investments.

According to her, investors under the FGN Securities do not need to panic as they get their dividends as and when due.

“You can use them as collateral to obtain loans from banks and other financial institutions, and they help in diversification of investment portfolio.

“They are also a source of steady income, as investors’ interests are paid every six months or every three months, and they are tradable on the stock exchange, ” she said.

On the awareness drive in the state, Oniha said the event was to educate retail and other investors in the state on the benefits of investing in the various FGN Securities.

“This programme was designed to create awareness about the various financial offerings and investment opportunities of the Federal Government amongst the Nigerian public,” she said.

She said that it was advisable for all Nigerians to get actively involved in the financial market, either by buying shares or bonds.

Foluke Samuel, Lead Sales, Northern Region, CSL Stockbrokers Limited told NAN in an interview on the sideline of the event that all investments in FGN Securities guaranteed dividends and profits.

Samuel said FGN Securities were free of scams and other related issues associated with most online investments that scare Nigerians.

“There will be no stories when it comes to getting your investment back or dividends because these instruments are actually backed by the Federal Government.

“It is an obligation on the Federal Government; there is no default irrespective of administration or who heads the government.

“This makes FGN Securities safe; no stories, no scams, invest and have rest of mind,” she said.

According to her, the products are open to all Nigerians, and not restricted for certain classes of people, as there is a category for everyone.

She advised youths to embrace the investment opportunities being offered by the government, to make profits and be able to meet future financial needs.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ghana needs training centres for people living with down syndrome – Pediatrician

Dr Amma Benin, Head of the Paediatric Department, International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), has advised that children with Down Syndrome should be helped to develop their potentials.

‘They are an important part of our society and should not be ignored or disciminated against,’ Dr Benin said, and called for more specialised schools to be built for them.

She said it was time for corporations and philanthropists to join forces to establish training institutions or foundations for people with Down syndrome.

Dr Benin made the remarks during the weekly ‘Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility,’ a Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office initiative aimed at promoting health-related communication and providing a platform for health information dissemination to influence personal health choices through improved health literacy.

The Tema Regional Office of the Ghana News Agency created the public health advocacy platform ‘Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility’ to examine the aspects of four health communication approaches: informing, instructing, persuading, and urging.

Speaking on the topic of the 2023 World Down Syndrome Celebration, ‘With Us, Not For Us,’ Dr. Benin stated that it sought to remind the entire community that individuals with Down syndrome needed to be a part of the work done to give them the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

She added that the families’ unity might serve as a support mechanism for them to share ideas on how to care for their kids and other pertinent information.

She went on to say that the Autism Society of Ghana was started by a parent of a kid with the illness and that in order for society to be properly aware of Down syndrome, their families needed to take the first move.

She warned against stigmatizing families or parents with Down syndrome, stating that it could happen to anyone at any time.

She said depending on their intelligence quotient (IQ), certain children would be unable to attend a conventional school, emphasizing that the government must establish such training schools in all regions for children with special needs.

Mr. Francis Ameyibor, Regional Manager of Ghana News Agency Tema, explained that ‘Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility’ is part of a collaborative effort to establish a means for the dissemination of health information in order to influence individual health decisions by increasing health literacy.

He added that it also aims to leverage the Ghana News Agency’s and medical experts’ communication skills to inform the public that everyone’s health is important and should be a top concern.

He said the weekly health debate platform would also be used as a beneficial channel of communication for health specialists to inform the public on healthy behaviours and other general health concerns.

WHO launches initiative to address COVID-19 cases

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it has launched the Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats Initiative, (PRET) an integrated approach to pandemic planning, by focusing on groups of pathogens.

Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General said this during an online media conference.

“Today, WHO launched the PRET, which the acronym is deliberate: ‘prêt, meaning ‘ready’ in French.

“Rather than focusing on specific pathogens or diseases, PRET takes an integrated approach to pandemic planning, by focusing on groups of pathogens and the systems they affect.

“To begin with, PRET will focus on respiratory pathogens, including influenza, coronaviruses, RSV, and as-yet-unknown pathogens,” he said.

Ghebreyesus said that pandemics were by definition, global events, so PRET was designed to promote collaboration between countries.

According to him, it is also designed to promote collaboration between sectors.

He said that as COVID-19 demonstrated, a pandemic was not just a health crisis, it affected economies, education, trade, travel, food supply systems and more.

WHO boss said that PRET would therefore support countries to engage as many sectors as possible, as well as civil society groups, religious communities and young people.

“This integrated approach will help countries to review, test, and update their pandemic planning efforts to ensure they have the right capacities and capabilities in place,” he said.

Ghebreyesus said that the COVID-19 pandemic was a powerful demonstration of the lifesaving power of vaccines.

He said that the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan – the (SPRP) outlining the steps countries needed to take to prepare for, and respond to the new virus.

According to him, in first week of May the organisation will publish its fourth SPRP, which is designed to guide countries over the next two years to transition from an emergency response to long-term, sustained management of COVID-19.

“We are very encouraged by the sustained decline in reported deaths from COVID-19, which have dropped 95% since the beginning of this year.

“However, some countries are seeing increases, and over the past four weeks, 14,000 people lost their lives to this disease,” he said.

Ghebreyesus said that an estimated one in 10 infections resulted in post-COVID-19 condition, suggesting that hundreds of millions of people would need longer-term care.

According to him, as the emergence of the new XBB.1.16 variant illustrates, the virus is still changing, and is still capable of causing new waves of disease and death.

“We remain hopeful that sometime this year, we will be able to declare an end to COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern.

“But this virus is here to stay, and all countries will need to learn to manage it alongside other infectious diseases.

“The new SPRP will support countries to make that transition,” he said.

According to him, vaccines have played a key role in helping to curb COVID-19, the pandemic severely disrupted routine immunization programmes around the world.

“Over the course of the pandemic, essential immunisation levels fell in more than 100 countries, leading to rising outbreaks of measles, diphtheria, polio and yellow fever.

“Between 2019 and 2021, an estimated 67 million children missed out on at least one essential immunization, including 48 million children who missed out entirely.

“This dramatic reversal follows almost a decade of stalled progress, and has set back vaccination rates to levels not seen since 2008,” he said.

Ghebreyesusn said that WHO and partners launched “The Big Catch-up”, a global effort to boost vaccination levels in children to at least pre-pandemic levels.

He said that The Big Catch-up would have a particular focus on 20 countries around the world in which three-quarters of the children who missed out on vaccination in 2021 lived.

WHO boss said that all countries, rich and poor, had work to do in addressing the barriers to immunisation, whether access, availability, cost or disinformation.

Also, on malaria, he said there had been incredible progress made against it over the last two decades.

According to him, advances in nets, tests and medicines have helped to prevent more than 2 billion cases and saved an estimated 12 million lives.

“The world’s first malaria vaccine has so far reached 1.5 million children in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, and a second malaria vaccine is now in development.

“These innovations have been made possible by investment in cutting edge research and development.

“But even with all of these advances, malaria remains a leading cause of death for people in low-income countries, and still claims more than 600,000 lives each year.

He said that at a time when more investment was needed, the global malaria response faced significant shortfalls.

“World Malaria Day, marked every April 26, is a reminder of the urgent need to close investment gaps, scale up research and development.

“By using all the tools we have, old and new, we can move closer to the vision of “zero malaria,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
