Pakistan urges return of Afghanistan’s assets to its people

Islamabad, February 12, 2022 (PPI-OT): Pakistan has reiterated its call for returning Afghanistan’s national assets, held in the United States, to the Afghan people. Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram while speaking in New York said the money is critically needed to revive Afghanistan’s war-battered economy.

He said the funds would help to sustain the Afghan economy, inject much needed liquidity, and save millions of lives in the middle of a harsh winter. Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has hailed the US decision to free up half of $7 billion in frozen Afghan assets to help the suffering people. Spokesman of UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric said in New York that it was also important to reiterate that humanitarian assistance alone will be insufficient to meet the tremendous needs of Afghan women, men and children over the long term.
