Train derails in north Bengal, 9 dead, 36 injured

Srinagar, January 14, 2022 (PPI-OT): Several people were feared dead or trapped in the Guwahati-bound Bikaner Express train that derailed in Moynaguri region of Bengal, with officials confirming at least nine deaths so far.

Indian Minister for Minority Affairs, John Barla, visited the accident site of Guwahati-Bikaner Express early Friday morning for inspection. He informed that the media that at least 9 casualties have been reported in the tragic incident while 36 people have suffered injuries. The rescue operation is complete and those injured are being treated, he said.

On hearing the news, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee left a COVID review meeting held by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and issued instructions to the district administration for relief and rescue work.

As per reports, around 12 coaches have derailed. The exact location of the accident is said to be near the newly inaugurated New Domohani Railway Station. Rajesh Kumar, the chief Reservation supervisor, Patna junction, Bihar, said 98 passengers boarded the train from Patna junction and 3 from Mokama and 2 from Bakhtiarpur.
