The 2023 North West Regional Football League started on Sunday, June 4, 2023, in Bamenda, after several controversies surrounding the competition for months.

The competition which is aimed to secure a place in the National Interpoles started in the region with 14 matches played on the opening day.

There was no official launching ceremony, unlike other regions, where the first day of play is usually colorful.

The scanty nature of the fields during the matches on Sunday was a clear example of how the fans and population of the region have lost interest in the competition.

In other regions like the South West, Littoral, and Centre, the competition started about 2 months ago and some clubs are already on day 9 matches.

It is reported that many regional league players in the North West region are in competition without licenses. The unprofessional nature of the competition could also be seen in the dressing of players and the poor officiating style by match officials.

Fans and football lovers in the region have continued to blame the North West FECAFOOT president, Mbigha Felix, and his executive for failing to acquire licenses for the clubs on time.

Mbigha, who doubles as the Mayor of Bamenda I council has also been criticized on several occasions for ‘mixing politics with football’.

“There’s no good field in Bamenda because he wants that everything should remain in his village Bamendankwe. Look at where children play football, a professional league of this nature. This man is really killing football in this region,” a fan lamented at C.S Futru on Sunday.

During day 1 of the matches, which took place at four different earthly fields, a total of 43 goals were scored.

13 matches have been scheduled for Tuesday, June 6, just a day after. Many club officials and players have been grumbling on social media platforms, advocating that a single day of rest is insufficient.

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Front, SDF Ni John Fru Ndi will not stand as a candidate for the upcoming elective convention scheduled for July 28 and 29, 2023.

This was confirmed during the National Executive Committee, NEC meeting which took place in Yaounde on Saturday, June 3, 2023.

This decision will be marked as history since the existence of the party.

The 1st Vice chairman of SDF, Hon Joshua Osih stated that the National Executive Committee meeting was aimed at focusing on finalizing works on reorganizing the basic organ of the opposition party that has shaped the political dispensation of Cameroon’s political history.

” The Party is strong and alive, there is no place where our mobilization team has gone to and they didn’t meet mobilization. Everywhere we have people vying for positions and we are

very confident that before the convention, all our 10 regions will

be reorganized and the party will be ready for a fresh start” the vice chairman said.

Joshua Osih added that although the party has lost some members due to death, they will not relent in pushing forward the party’s agenda.

“You build a political party to grow but from time to time people resign, people get into situations and unfortunately cases of death…What is important in the party is to continue recruiting people, giving hope to the Cameroonian people, and working relentlessly to make sure that the party can bring about its agenda for change in Cameroon,” he said.

The Belo Council in the Boyo Division of the North West Region was the only council from the region to receive an award at the just-ended 2023 edition of the Council’s International Economic Forum also known in French as Journées économiques internationales des municipalités, JEICOM.

The awards were given during the closing ceremony of the forum on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Yaounde Conference Center.

According to Mayor Ngong Innocent who was there to receive the prize on behalf of his council, the award is a compensation of the people of Belo for their hard work and persistence.

“This prize is going to the youths and people of Belo that are working very hard in producing potatoes, beans, honey, and tea in the Ndawara tea factory. It tells you what our farmers are able to produce. All of these contribute to food security and by this, we are showing to the world what we are capable of producing,” the Mayor said.

He equally noted that “The prize is an appreciation of their hard work, I want them to know that what they are doing is going to go a long way to help the whole nation of Cameroon and Africa. I want to assure them that so many people out of the country, Belgium, Italy, Vietnam Brazil have appreciated their products and I am calling on them to produce more and be proud of what they are doing”.

Mayor Ngong Innocent also stated that for three days of the Forum, the Belo Council Stand received over 1000 visitors who were excited and happy with their produce. This helped them get international contacts.

Out of 360 Councils that were in competition, the organizing committee awarded the top five councils at the event, with the Belo Council ranked in the fifth position.

During the forum, stakeholders including councils, the government, foreign investors, and local businessmen had as their main aim to brainstorm ways to empower municipalities, foster digitalization, tackle food security, hygiene, and sanitation, develop tourism, and promote wood processing amongst other projects.
