Two years on, no arrests as culprits of JNU attack roam free

New Delhi, January 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Fifth January 2022, marked two years of the deadly attack on the students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). It also marked two years of inaction by the police, JNU administration, and the government.

It was on the very same day, in 2020, masked people entered the university campus with lathis and rods to beat the students and teachers, leaving them bleeding on the library and hostel floors. To mark this dark day, we gathered at the Sabarmati Dhaba, inside the campus, when the blatant attack took place.

“We remember 5 January, because of the attack on the campus, one of the series of attacks, in which students were abused and beaten and the hostels were vandalised. It was marked on the calendar with a message ‘Yes, we will beat you like this, what will you do?’ The government, which is carrying out attacks across groups, is responsible for this. The police is also responsible because we kept calling them, but they did not respond. The university administration and the Vice-Chancellor are responsible for all the injuries, blood, and broken bones. But JNU is ready to fight against them.” Dhananjay Kumar, Student, JNU

We live in a democratic country and JNU upholds the spirit of democracy to its core. We can never be silenced and this is one of the biggest reasons why the attack took place. It was an attack on not only the students and teachers but also the Constitution.

Since October 2019, we have been protesting against the fee hike that the university had imposed over the students. We knew that if the fee hike would be imposed, many would not be able to get into JNU because, as per the university data, over 50 percent of the students come from economically weaker backgrounds.

We had managed to successfully carry out our protests for over two months. All attempts made by the administration and government to dislodge our agitation failed. It was then that a deadly attack was carried out by some masked people over the protesting students and the teachers.

And there is a reason we call this attack orchestrated. While the attack was taking place, we kept calling the police but they did not come. They only came once the attackers safely left the campus. And even now, no action has been taken.

“It has been two years. Every time we have gone to pursue cases with the Delhi Police we have got no affirmative response. And what we have seen in the aftermath of what took place on 5 Jan (2020) is an environment of terror, fear, and helplessness because the spate and instances of violence by the ABVP on students have increased multifold. Because of the sense of impunity they have developed whether it be vis-a-vis JNU administration, which took no action against these goons, or whether it be Delhi Police.” Apeksha Priyadarshini, Student, JNU

“Those who attacked us were completely protected. They had this sense of impunity when they were attacking us, that nothing was going to happen to them and till date it is proved that nothing has happened to them. Even though there are witnesses, people we identified on Facebook, there are videos that were circulated, but nothing has happened.” Lata, Student, JNU

To those who feel that they can silence us with their lathis, rods, and guns, we want to tell them we will continue to fight to protect the foundation of JNU.

But to JNU administration we want to ask:

“New students who are coming to study at JNU have fear in their minds, wondering whether they will be able to complete their degrees safely. Will the university be able to provide them with the safe space that it used to, 10-20 years ago?” Surya Prakash, Student, JNU.

Sikhs being ‘terrorised’ on social media after Modi’s security breach: Akal Takht jathedar

Amritsar, January 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Akal Takht jathedar has said that the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s security breach should not have happened, but what is happening after it in the form of vilification of Sikhs is even worse. Akal Takht acting jathedar, Giani Harpreet Singh, in a video message on Friday said the Sikhs are being “terrorised” on social media platforms following the security breach during Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on Wednesday.

While condemning the incident and blaming the “lack of coordination” between central and state officials for it, the jathedar said: “What happened in regard to the visit of the Prime Minister is not good, It is being seen that after this incident, Sikhs are being targeted and hateful remarks are being passed to them over social media. This is very unfortunate”.

The Akal Takht jathedar said that normally an act to kill unarmed and innocent civilians is considered terrorism, but “verbally targeting and vilifying any particular community is also a type of terrorism”.

“Surprisingly, the government is not containing the elements indulging in spreading this kind of terrorism. Even some responsible persons have indulged in making such remarks and threatening the community to repeat 1984-like tragedies (anti-Sikh violence). This is not good in any way. This is kind of hate terrorism. The Government of India must rein in this kind of terrorism that is worse and more dangerous than ordinary terrorism in the world,” he said.

Giani Harpreet Singh said that what happened with the Prime Minister has no link with Sikhs. “Yet, they are facing such vilification. Action should be taken against those behind it. They should be booked under sedition charges,” he said.

He said that Sikhs were vilified even during the farmers’ agitation even as it was a dispute between farmers and the government. “Now, again Sikhs are being dragged into this fresh dispute, while it is one between two governments or political parties. The Union Government should pay attention to it,” he said.

BJP workers thrash youth, force him to lick spit in Dhanbad

New Delhi, January 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):A youth was thrashed, forced to lick his spit and chant ‘Jai Sri Ram’ on Friday, allegedly by a group of BJP workers and leaders in Dhanbad city of the Indian state of Jharkhand. In a video, which has gone viral on social media, the youth, said to be belonging to a minority community, is seen beaten up, doing sit-ups and forced to lick his spit and chant ‘Jai Sri Ram’ and ‘BJP zindabad’, by a group of BJP leaders and workers.

The BJP leader and workers were on a dharna at Gandhi Chowk, near the Combined Building in Dhanbad town, protesting against the security lapses during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on Wednesday. The youth, passing through the spot, allegedly used some unparliamentary words against Modi and State BJP chief Dipak Prakash. He was caught and thrashed.

Local people told media that the police remained mute spectators. Later, the youth ran away from the spot. The State Congress and other party leaders too condemned the incident and demanded a probe “so that perpetrators will be identified and stern action could be taken against them”.

Islamabad, January 07, 2022 (PPI-OT):Government’s policies of Smart Lockdown and incentive for the construction industry, social protection programs and subsidies for industries, small and medium enterprises kept the economy growing at a steady pace which has been praised by commentators globally. PM The government’s three years are an economic success story as we inherited huge circular debt, anti export policies, unsustainable fiscal conditions, less competitive business environment and policies of lack of incentive for the private sector.

PM Despite worst balance of payments crisis in the history of Pakistan in 2018, economic difficulties due to COVID, high commodity prices in the global market and humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan having direct and indirect impact on Pakistan, the growth is still expected to be above 4% which is a huge achievement.

The exports have shown an increase of 25%, tax revenues are record high with an increase of 38% and remittances have also increased by 27%. Moreover, the agriculture sector saw record incomes (Rs 1100 billion additional transfers to farmers), record high profits of Rs 950 billion by industries, boom in IT sector due to government’s IT policy, reduction in monthly circular debt after successful IPP tariff agreements.

In addition to the above, the government fulfilled its promise of a welfare state by launching the biggest social safety program under Ehsaas, brought institutional reforms and successfully complied with FATF’s conditions which saved us from going into the blacklist. The meeting was also presented with proposals to mitigate the transfer of the effects of high global commodity prices to common people.

The proposals included an increase in incomes, purchasing power of the people, subsidies focused on middle and lower income classes and expansion of social safety net. The Prime Minister directed the concerned departments to coordinate and implement the long term and short-term plans for the further betterment of both macroeconomic condition of the county and improvement in economic condition of the people.

The meeting was attended by Federal Ministers Shaukat Fayyaz Tarin, Hammad Azhar, Fawad Chauhdary, Asad Umar, Makhdom Khusro Bakhtiyar, Syed Fakhar Imam, MOS Farrukh Habib, Advisor to PM Abdul Razzaq Dawood, SAPMs Dr Sania Nishtar, Dr Shehbaz Gill, Governor State Bank Raza Baqir and concerned senior officials.
