Pakistan calls for coherent response to challenges faced by G77 countries 

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan has called for coherent and concerted response to the daunting challenges faced by the Group of 77 countries in order to ensure that none of them is left behind. The call was made by Pakistan’s envoy to the UN Munir Akram, who is also Chairman of the Group of 77 for current year, during the first ambassadorial meeting of the group.

He said we are confronted with a triple challenge of recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, achievement of the Sustainable Developments Goals and the existential threat of climate change. The Pakistani envoy identified and elaborated some of the actions Pakistan has proposed to deal with these challenges.

Government intends to regularize cryptocurrency in country: Shibli 

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz says the government intends to regularize cryptocurrency in the country. Addressing the first Pakistan Blockchain Summit 2022, in Islamabad, he said the State Bank of Pakistan, Securities and Exchange Commission and Finance Division are already working on the plan. The Minister said blockchain will become a 20-billion market by 2024 and about 200 countries have somehow incorporated it into their systems.

He said people are turning to cryptocurrency without proper planning, therefore, government’s control is essential for prevention from loss and ensuring transparency in it. Shibli Faraz said banks can save eight to ten billion rupees annually by using blockchain. He said the Ministry of Science and Technology is also launching blockchain technology pilot projects in its three universities.

National Highway Authority completes arrangements for snow removal from Islamabad-Muzaffarabad dual carriageway

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):The National Highway Authority (NHA) has completed all arrangements for snow removal from Islamabad-Muzaffarabad dual carriageway as the Met Office has forecast more snowfall in Murree. Required machinery and personnel have been dispatched to the possibly most affected areas. The Chairman NHA and relevant authorities are monitoring the entire process.

Fakhar Imam calls for improving farmers’ access to loans 

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Minister for National Food Security and Research Syed Fakhar Imam has stressed for improving farmers access to loans for increasing efficiency of the agricultural sector. He was chairing a meeting of National Coordination Committee on Agricultural Revolution in Islamabad on Wednesday. The meeting discussed agricultural inputs and fertilizer subsidy to farmers.

Reiterating the government’s resolve for development of agricultural sector and prosperity of farmers, the Minister said we need to invest in high value crops with a focus on increasing regional fruit and vegetable production along with traditional crops. He also stressed for promoting organic farming in the country and establishing value chain of fruits like cherry and lychee. He said we can learn from experience of other countries and their research can be applied in our own country.

Foreign Minister urges unity on Constitutional amendment for South Punjab

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has invited all opposition parties to reach consensus with the government on passage of a Constitutional amendment for the creation of a separate province for South Punjab.

In a tweet on Wednesday, he said irrespective of political affiliation, national interest requires unity on the issue. He said PTI’s manifesto promises the creation of a separate province for the people of South Punjab and as a party we worked consistently to deliver on it.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said our focus is socio-economic uplift through reforms and setting up of a South Punjab Civil Secretariat and district development coordination committees for better service delivery to people is a manifestation of this fact. He mentioned the institution of a separate administrative structure, budgets, jobs and benefits with over 35 percent development budget for South Punjab and ring fencing to stop financial re-appropriation.

Pakistan, UAE express determination to strengthen existing ties between two countries 

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan and United Arab Emirates (UAE) have expressed determination to further strengthen the existing fraternal ties between the two countries. The resolve was expressed during a visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nayhan to Pakistan Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai where he was received by Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UAE Afzaal Mahmood.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nayhan said Pakistan and UAE have supported each other throughout history of their relationship. He praised Pakistan Expo Team for effectively displaying the potential of its country at the Expo.

Expressing condolence over the demise of a Pakistani national in a terror attack in Abu Dhabi on Monday, the UAE Foreign Minister conveyed condolences and assured of every possible support in repatriation of dead body of the deceased and treatment of the two Pakistanis injured in the attack. He greatly appreciated the expression of support and solidarity from the government of Pakistan in the wake of heinous terrorist attacks.

On his part, Ambassador Afzaal Mahmood strongly condemned the terror attack and conveyed condolences and expressed solidarity by the government and the people of Pakistan with the leadership and people of the UAE. The Ambassador thanked the government of UAE for its sympathy for the family of Pakistani national who was victim of the attack and support to the injured. He also conveyed gratitude to the UAE for extending fullest support to Pakistan Expo Team.

Prime Minister affirms Pakistan’s solidarity with UAE 

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prime Minister Imran Khan telephoned Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and condemned the heinous terrorist attack by Houthi militia on civil facilities in the UAE. The Prime Minister affirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the UAE and rejection of any threat to its security and sovereignty.

He also offered his condolences for the victims of these attacks and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. On his part, Sheikh Mohamed expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Prime Minister for his sincere feelings towards the UAE and its people.

Ambassador Munir Akram, insists on a coherent and concerted response to the challenges confronting developing countries 

Islamabad, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):At the First Ambassadorial meeting of the Group of 77 and China, Ambassador Munir Akram, the Permanent Representative of Pakistan in his capacity as a Chair of Group of 77+ China said that “Our responsibility today to address the multiple challenges facing our countries is daunting”. “We can only do so if our response is coherent and concerted and if our Group remains united” Ambassador Munir Akram, insisted, says a press release received here today from New York.

Ambassador Munir Akram while discussing the confronted challenges to the world community said further that: “Since 2007, when Pakistan last chaired the Group, the global economic and social conditions have changed radically”.

He recalled Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s statement in the G77 handover ceremony saying: “we are confronted with a triple challenge: recovery from the Covid-19 Pandemic; achievement of the SDGs – during the remaining decade of action; and the existential threat of climate change”.

While deliberating on the responsibilities of the Group of 77 in the past he recalled that: “In the past, the Group of G77 has shaped the discourse and outcomes of multilateral processes on a range of issues of collective importance to its members” As a Chair of the Group, Ambassador Munir Akram, elaborated on some of the actions Pakistan had proposed.

G77 to develop a declaration on vaccine equity that is hampering recovery of the developing countries from Covid-19 pandemic. G77 to ensure its voice is heard at the G20 (industrialized countries), G7 (rich countries), IMF (International Monetary Fund) and other decision-making platforms on the rising and unsustainable debt burden, as a major concern among many developing countries.

G77 to ensure that the new general allocation of $650 billion special Drawing Rights (SDRs) by the IMF are utilized for the recovery, and press for their reallocation to the developing countries who need the liquidity; G77 to Prioritize for unification and universalization of measures on social protection during 2022, for which Pakistan is leading discussion on the Declaration to establish a global knowledge platform.

Underscore the role of UN Development System and private sector to substantially upscale and accelerate investments to bridge the global infrastructure gap; A follow-up of the Glasgow Climate Pact to ensure reflection of G77 priorities in the actions proposed in the pact.

Convening a series of consultations to enable the Group to formulate a common position on the issues of interest in the Secretary-General’s “Our Common Agenda” report for the developing countries.

Consideration of the creation of the ‘South-South Trade Promotion Bureau (SSTPB)’ to boost flow of goods between them; three things are essential: availability of adequate finance; significant investments in sustainable infrastructure; and the full utilization of science, technology, and innovation, he concluded.

Ambassador Munir Akram expressed his gratitude for the confidence reposed in Pakistan to Chair the Group in these challenging times. He also thanked Guinea for so skilfully guiding the Group last year. Pakistan is Chairing the Group of G77 and China fourth time.
