Odisha: Cops attack villagers protesting over steel plant in Dhinkia

Odisha, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):People of Dhinkia in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district barricaded their village entrance following the violent police crackdown on Friday for protesting against a proposed steel plant. A faceoff between villagers and police turned violent, leading to nearly 50 villagers sustaining injuries. Male policemen were caught on camera attacking women during the crackdown. Activists claims that injured children and women have not even received medical assistance due to the hostile situation. 15 policemen sustaining injuries and five villagers were arrested, Indian Express reported.

After winning a decade-long battle to evict POSCO, the South Korean global steel company in 2017, the villagers renewed their protest last month after government planned to hand over the land to JSW Utkal Steel Limited. JSW Steel has proposed to establish a 13.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity steel plant at an estimated cost of around Rs 55,000 crore. Government claims that the land was transferred to JSW Steel in 2017.

The villagers alleged that since Thursday, police had been forcibly destroying their betel vines to set up the steel plant. The crackdown sparked outrage from activists across India. The land acquisition process is stopped due to the hostile situation in the locality.

The village has been protesting since December last year after the demarcation of Mahala, a newly created revenue village in the panchayat. The villagers accuse that the demarcation was done to divide the village and scatter the villagers in order to derail the movement against the proposed steel plant.

Shabbir Shah concerned over deteriorating HR situation in IIOJK

Srinagar, January 19, 2022 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the incarcerated APHC Vice Chairman, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in territory.

Shabbir Ahmad Shah in a message from New Delhi’s infamous Tihar jail said that after the illegal and unilateral measures taken by the Narendra Modi-led fascist Indian government on August 5, 2019, the human rights situation in IIOJK had deteriorated to an alarming proportion. He termed the Indian actions as a blatant violation of UN resolutions and said that August 5 was a dark chapter in Kashmir’s history which Kashmiris would never forget.

The APHC leader made it clear that the Kashmiris would not hesitate to render any sacrifice to take their just struggle for securing their right to self-determination to its logical end. He deplored the ongoing Indian state terrorism in the occupied territory and said if the Indian rulers think that they will succeed in suppressing the Kashmiris’ freedom sentiment through the violence and oppression then they are mistaken.

Shabbir Shah said that the Kashmiris have neither accepted India’s illegal occupation of their homeland nor will they recognize its undemocratic and illegal measures of August 5, 2019. He urged New Delhi to give up its stubborn and unrealistic behaviour and create a conducive environment to settle the Kashmir dispute.

The APHC Vice Chairman said hundreds of thousands of Kashmiris have sacrificed their lives for the Kashmir cause in the last 73 years and India cannot deprive the Kashmiri people of their birth right, the right to self-determination.

He said that the day is not far away when the great sacrifices of Kashmiris will pay off and they will get freedom from Indian yoke. He said that at a time when the fascist Modi government is hell bent upon eroding the Kashmiris’ political, historical and religious identity, the people of IIOJK must forge greater unity among their ranks to frustrate its nefarious designs.

Shabbir Shah maintained that permanent peace cannot be established in South Asia without resolving the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the Kashmiris’ aspirations. He urged the Indian intellectuals to play their role in finding a peaceful solution to the dispute, which is the main cause of tension, arms race, political and economic instability, hunger and unemployment in the region.
