Pledge reaffirmed to fulfill mission of Handwara massacre victims

Srinagar, January 25, 2022 (PPI-OT): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference General Secretary, Molvi Bashir Ahmad Irfani, while paying rich tributes to the martyrs of Handwara massacre on its 32nd anniversary has reaffirmed the Kashmiris’ pledge to take the martyrs’ sacred mission of freedom to its logical conclusion, against all odds.

On 25 January 1990, at least 21 Kashmiris were gunned down by Indian troops in north Kashmir’s Handwara town. Molvi Bashir Irfani in a statement issued in Srinagar vowed to fulfill the dreams of the martyrs and added that they would never surrender to the Indian military might, come what may.

Reiterating the shutdown call given by the APHC on January 26, the India’s Republic Day, and the Hurriyat leader said that the day has been no less than a dooms day for the people of Kashmir. The presence of more than one million occupation forces are roaming on the roads, lanes and by lanes, from big cities to the little hamlets, which is enough to prove the reality of the Republic Day celebrations in the territory as ordinary people never participate in such events, he added.

Terming the so-called Republic Day celebrations a cruel joke, he said that India should read the clear message from the people of Kashmir that they have always rejected its illegal occupation. “There is only one people’s demand and that is right to self-determination as guaranteed by the United Nations Security Council resolutions.” He urged the United Nations Secretary General to take serious action against the heinous criminal record of Indian occupation forces in the occupied territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

APHC leader, Ghulam Nabi Waseem, in a statement issued in Srinagar deplored that Killer Indian troops are roaming free despite passage of 32 years. He pointed out that massacres would continue to occur till Kashmir is freed from Indian occupation. Citing experts, he said, Genocide Watch has already issued warning alerts about genocide by Indian troops in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Ghotki, January 25, 2022 (PPI-OT): President Dr Arif Alvi, today, said that India was promoting hatred among its communities, while Pakistan was focused on ‘bringing the hearts closer’. He said the Pakistani nation is strong in moral character and has the potential to make its mark in the world.

Time for retrospection for India – as its social fabric stands in tatters

Islamabad, January 25, 2022 (PPI-OT): As ‘shining’ India prepares itself for celebrating its 73rd Republic Day on January 26, it may want to cast a glance on the trajectory of majoritarian Hindutva rule embraced by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, Minister for Home Affairs.

For all those who matter in the so-called largest democracy, they may also want to look back at the path the country has taken to stoop this low, as the image it had built for itself based on the principles of Nehruvian secularism.

India observes Republic Day on January 26, every year. Republic Day marks an important event in India’s history. It commemorates the enactment of the constitution of India which came into effect on January 26, 1950, and made the nation into a republic. But, religious freedom conditions in India are taking a drastic turn downward, with national and various state governments tolerating widespread harassment and violence against religious minorities. Indeed, the current regime’s fascist policies have put the image of secular India at stake.

Under the majoritarian rule of fascist Narendra Modi India certainly has become a Hindu Rashtra (Hindu state) and this view is widely held to be true by many insiders as well as outside observers of Indian politics. There are many reports which indicate that ever since Modi’s ascendance to power the number of hate crimes, cases of religious discrimination have increased manifold.

One example is that of Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA). The BJP-led government enacted the CAA, which provides a fast track to Indian citizenship only for non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan already residing in India. This potentially exposes millions of Muslims to detention, deportation and statelessness when the government completes its planned nationwide National Register of Citizens.

The other example is that of majoritarian violence against Christian community. According to a report by a human rights group, more than 300 attacks on Christians took place in the first nine months of the last year (2021), including at least 32 in Karnataka.

The report found that of the total 305 incidents of anti-Christian violence, four north Indian states registered as many as 169 of them: 66 in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh, 47 in Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh, 30 in tribal-dominated Jharkhand, and 30 in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh. At least nine Indian states have planned anti-conversion laws, including Chhattisgarh, which, activists say, has emerged as a “new laboratory” for anti-Christian hatred in India.

The same report points out a stark contradiction: “Meanwhile, state governments have pursued laws that justify this bigotry. On Dec. 23, the lower house in the state of Karnataka passed the Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, which is designed to prohibit conversion from Hinduism to another faith.”

Illegally Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir is another story, another ground where the majoritarian bias is being played out. On 5 August 2019, the government of India revoked the special constitutional status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution, and abrogated Article 35A which had allowed it to define who its ‘permanent residents’ are and what rights and privileges are attached to such residency.

The former state was bifurcated into the Union Territories of Ladakh (without a legislature) and Jammu-Kashmir (with a legislature). The fact that India has become a dangerous country for religious minorities is endorsed by many other reports published in international media outlets.

As Summit Ganguly, a columnist at Foreign Policy as well as a distinguished professor of political science and the Rabindranath Tagore Chair in Indian Cultures and Civilizations at Indiana University, Bloomington, has rightly pointed out that India’s religious minorities are under attack and ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on a recent spate of hate speech and violence is deafening’.

Similarly, Mahwish Hafeez also points out in her paper titled ‘Status of Minorities in India’ published by Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad: “A closer look reveals that under the facade of democracy and secularism or unity in diversity, minorities and particularly Muslims and Christians have always suffered at the hands of extremist Hindu countrymen.

This suffering has been taking place despite the right that the Indian constitution has given to all its citizens. Also, the hatred against the religious minorities has risen immensely in recent years particularly with the rise of Modi and Hindutva ideology.”

Welcome to Modi’s fascist India!

Transsion and HERE partner to enhance location accuracy experience for smartphone users in emerging markets

  • Businesses and smartphone users in emerging markets will experience precise location fix on their apps and devices, even in challenging indoor and outdoor environments

Beijing and Mumbai – HERE Technologies, the leading location data and technology platform, today announced that Transsion, the leading provider of smart devices and mobile services in global emerging markets, has selected HERE Network Positioning to improve its location accuracy capabilities in emerging markets such as Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand.

The global number of mobile internet users is expected to reach five billion by 2025, a 25% increase from 2020. This figure represents 60% of the world’s population, with much of the forecasted growth coming from emerging digital markets in Asia Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Latin America[i].

By deploying HERE Network Positioning, Transsion will be able to identify accurate positioning of its devices both indoors and outdoors. This works especially when satellite signals of Global Positioning System (GPS) are not available, such as when the device is located indoor or the GPS signals are blocked by objects. As a result, Transsion will enable its smartphone users to locate devices, people, and objects faster, with higher precision and confidence.

Robin Wang, Assistant President at Transsion said, “As a technology company with a focus on global emerging markets, we’ve long been committed to supporting local communities there. We’ve decided to deploy with HERE because they have presented a stand-out, compelling solution for markets that lack advanced infrastructure such as Africa and India.”

One use case that HERE Network Positioning will benefit is ride-hailing or ride-sharing. In Africa, ride-hailing has become increasingly popular over the years, with the number of users expected to grow 16% from 50.3 million in 2021 to 58.4 million by 2025[ii]. Traditional taxi companies are also pivoting their business model to include services that can be booked via mobile applications, making it more transparent for customers than before.

For these urban mobility services to stand out from its competition, a good user experience is key. HERE Network Positioning enables Transsion to gain an edge over its competitors by providing its users with more accurate calculations of estimated times of arrivals (ETA) and precise pick-up and drop-off locations. End users of Transsion will also benefit from more accurate positionings which may otherwise be affected due to the presence of buildings, trees, tunnels, bridges and atmospheric conditions that can put direct drivers to wrong locations.

“For ride-hailing services, being able to identify the exact location for pick-ups and drop-offs – whether it’s the right side of the street or the right entrance/exists within large venues such as airport or stadiums – makes a huge difference in improving user experience. That’s the difference Transsion is here to provide,” added Wang.

Sammie Xi, Director and Head of Business for Greater China at HERE Technologies said, “Transsion is taking a big step forward in enhancing the quality of data within emerging economies. This is truly meaningful and inspiring. We’ve seen how the pandemic has profoundly impacted our lives, economies, and the global digital landscape. We are immensely proud to support Transsion in providing a more inclusive connected world for consumers. ”

Growatt unveils AXE LV battery system to empower off-grid solar energy storage

UN Rights Agency Calls for Swift Return to Civilian Rule in Burkina Faso

U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet has condemned the military’s seizure of power in Burkina Faso and is calling for a swift return to civilian rule.

The high commissioner is calling on the coup leaders to immediately release President Roch Marc Christian Kabore and other high-level officials. Michelle Bachelet is urging the military to engage in meaningful dialogue with all sectors of society to restore the hard-won democratic gains that have been made in the country.

Bachelet’s spokeswoman, Ravina Shamdasani, accompanied the high commissioner on her visit to Burkina Faso at the end of November. She says there were evident signs of popular discontent with the government’s inability to handle the multi-faceted crises facing the country.

“You had climate change affecting the ability of herders and pastoralists to carry out their daily work and conflict as a result of climate change and that crisis. And then you have violent extremist groups attacking, coming through the porous borders of the country and launching increasing violent attacks against the local population,” she said.

Burkina Faso is also facing a humanitarian crisis. The United Nations estimates 3.5 million people need international aid to survive. It says nearly all, some 3.3 million people, are facing acute food shortages.

Shamdasani says U.N. monitors on the ground describe the situation as calm for now. But this may change during planned street protests.

“There are people protesting in support of the military coup, as well,” she said. “Those who are frustrated with what they perceive as ineffective measures taken to address the conflict. But again, we stress that a military takeover is not the solution.”

She says it is more important than ever to ensure the rule of law and the country’s obligations under international human rights law are fully respected. Shamdasani says it is crucial that people’s democratic rights are protected and that they are able to air their grievances without fear.

Supporters of Burkina Faso’s Military Welcome Coup

Supporters of Burkina Faso’s military have welcomed Monday’s coup, as the armed forces are seen as key in the fight against Islamist militants. Analysts say the coup and attempted assassination of deposed President Roch Kaboré raise concerns about long-term stability and a return to democracy.

On Monday evening, after taking control of the national TV station earlier in the day, a group of 14 soldiers appeared on screen with the message, “In view of the continuous deterioration of the security situation which threatens the very foundations of our nation, the manifest inability of the power of Mr. Roch Marc Christian Kaboré to unite the Burkinabés.”

The soldiers said they had seized power in the West African country and dissolved the Kaboré government.

It marked the end of a two-day mutiny by the army, the end of Kaboré’s six-year rule and the only period of democracy in Burkina Faso’s history.

While French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned the coup, as has the U.S. State Department, on Tuesday morning, more than a thousand pro-coup demonstrators gathered in the center of Ouagadougou to celebrate the military takeover.

One of the demonstrators, air traffic controller Jibre Traore, said the country has become unsafe.

“So far, we don’t have any response to terrorism. From Ouagadougou, you are not even able to step out more than 100 kilometers after Ouagadougou. When are we going to live in safety in our country?”

Kaboré and his government had come under increasing criticism for failing to subdue groups with links to Islamic State and al-Qaida militants.

The terrorist threat provoked a military coup in neighboring Mali last year.

Paul Melly, an analyst with London-based research group Chatham House, doubts that Monday’s takeover will have a positive effect.

“The coup in Burkina Faso doesn’t really do anything to take the country forward in terms of stability and organizing a response, either to the security crisis or to the establishment of some sort of clear roadmap forward in political terms. Because the constitutional institutions have been suspended the country is now at risk of being under sanctions from ECOWAS,” he said.

On Tuesday afternoon, West African political bloc ECOWAS announced it sees Burkina Faso’s power shift as a military coup, which could indicate a step toward political and economic sanctions.

ECOWAS recently imposed sanctions on Mali because its military leaders have tried to extend the transition to civilian rule by five years.

Andrew Lebovich is an analyst with the European Council on Foreign Relations.

“I think it’s a bit too early to say what’s going to happen in terms of democracy for the new military leadership. I think certainly it’s very unlikely that they’re going to turn over power anytime soon. The model in the region, looking at Guinea, looking at Mali, has been to push for a much longer transition timeline,” he said.

The soldiers who have taken over the country are yet to announce who Burkina Faso’s president will be, while the whereabouts of former President Kaboré is still not known.
